Jay Stewart

Hello, my name is Jay Stewart and I moved to Dubai from Qatar in January 2020. I have been teaching music since 2007 and have been Head of Department in 5 schools across England and the Middle East.

About Me

In 2017, I was awarded ‘Most Inspirational Teacher’ at the Northwest Archdiocese Awards (UK) and in 2019 won a Silver Award at the Pearson Teaching Awards (held in London) for ‘Most Inspirational Teacher.’ In 2019 I became a Specialist Leader in Education for music in the Northwest of England, supporting and collaborating with schools that wanted to raise standards in their music departments. Music is a massive part of my life and outside of teaching I am also a professional DJ and producer who writes and creates electronic music. I currently hold two residencies on two radio stations: Ibiza Stardust Radio and Better Days FM in London.

Why I love teaching Music?

There is no better profession than teaching. Instilling passion and enthusiasm into a child’s mind through music is extremely rewarding. Watching them mature professionally/emotionally and socially is just magic. On top of that I get to do what I love to do, day in and day out – that is, playing and making music with young people.  A phrase I love to use and live by is ‘music is the answer‘.

My Experience

I have been Head of Music in a range of fantastic, culturally rich cities including London, Leeds, Liverpool, Doha and now Dubai. In my previous role I was Head of Music and Specialist Leader in Education in Liverpool and the North West where I built an award winning music department over a 5 year period. I am relatively new to Safa, only starting in January 2020 and I am excited about transforming the music department into a thriving hub of creativity. We have already started this journey this year with a range of fantastic competitions and performances. Please observe our YouTube channel – SCS Music Department. Currently we offer the following ECA’s – ‘SCS Beat Bloco’ – A rich and diverse Brazilian drumming ‘bloco’ inspired by Samba. Also, we offer ‘School of Rock’ – a rock band for musicians of all ages and abilities, as well as a ‘Soul Choir’.

Principle Instrument – Drum Kit/Untuned Percussion . Secondary Instruments – Guitar, Bass, Piano, Ukulele. Harmonica, DJ and Music Producer.
