Course Outline

Physics at GCSE will follow the GCSE syllabus and will be examined using the AQA GCSE Physics (8463). This syllabus is
new from September 2016 with the first exams in 2018. This board has introduced the 1-9 grading scale that aligns
with the new scale for GCSE’s in England.

Topics Studied

The GCSE syllabus for AQA Physics tier has been broken up into nine main domains;

  •  Energy
  •  Electricity
  •  Particle model of matter
  •  Atomic structure
  •  Forces
  •  Waves
  •  Magnetism and electromagnetism
  •  Space physics
    Further to these domains, there will be a large amount of work devoted to working scientifically within the subject
    content. The syllabus requires 10 mandatory practical’s to be completed. The skills pupils will develop includes
    Development of scientific thinking Experimental skill and strategies
    Analysis and evaluation Scientific vocabulary, quantities, units, symbols, and nomenclature

Paper 1

Topics 1–4:
Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes
100 marks
50% of GCSE
Questions
Multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and
open response.

Paper 2

Topics 5-8 with some elements of energy change
Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes
100 marks
50% of GCSE
Questions
Multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and
open response.
