Mathematics (GCSE)

Mathematics (GCSE)

Sixth Form Overview

Students aged 17-18 years old

Course Outline

There are two tiers of entry for the exams. The foundation tier allows access to the grades 1-5 and the higher tier allows access to the grades 4-9. All students will be taught the higher tier syllabus in Year 10 with the intention that all students will be entered for the higher tier exam at the end of Year 11. If we feel that a student is not able to access the work at the higher level then we will allow the student to sit the foundation paper and we will make that decision at the end of Year 10.

Topics Studied

The IGCSE syllabus for both Foundation and Higher tier has been broken up into six main domains;
Numbers and the Number System
Equations, Formulae and Identities
Sequences, Functions and Graphs
Geometry and Trigonometry
Vectors and Transformation Geometry
Statistics and Probability

How it’s assessed

There are two tiers of entry for the exams. The foundation tier allows access to the grades 1-5 and the higher tier allows access to
the grades 4-9. All students will be taught the higher tier syllabus in Year 10 with the intention that all students will be entered for
the higher tier exam at the end of Year 11. If we feel that a student is not able to access the work at the higher level then we will
allow the student to sit the foundation paper and we will make that decision at the end of Year 10.
The course will be assessed through two exams at the end of Year 11. Each of the exams will last for 2 hours and will be marked out
of 100.
The Higher exam will have 40% of its questions at grade 4 and 5 and the other 60% will be distributed evenly throughout the other
grades 6, 7, 8 and 9.
The Foundation exam will also have 40% of its questions at grade 4 and 5 and the other 60% will be distributed evenly throughout
the other grades 1, 2 and 3.

Why choose it?

There will be a certain amount of questioning designed to assess students problem solving and mathematical reasoning skills. These
